Hello there, I'm Aiden, and I'm knee-deep in the exhilarating adventure of constructing my own dream home. As I scoured the internet for inspiration, I stumbled upon a surprising gap: there seemed to be a scarcity of comprehensive resources catering to individuals embarking on the journey of crafting their custom-built abode. Determined to fill this void, I took it upon myself to blaze a trail and launched my very own DIY UA-cam channel.
My mission? To ignite the flames of creativity and motivation in others by generously sharing the highs, lows, and everything in between of my self-build escapade. Through my channel, I aspire to offer a beacon of guidance and inspiration, serving as a testament that with passion, perseverance, and a sprinkle of ingenuity, anyone can transform their vision of a perfect home into a tangible reality.

DIY'er does Electrics: What Could Go Wrong?
Join me in this exciting episode of "DIY'er Does Electrics" as I tackle a couple of important electrical upgrades for my water sewage treatment plant. Watch as I change out the control panel and replace the existing double UK socket with an enclosed outdoor-style European one to eliminate issues with adaptors. To compensate for the lost double socket, I also wire up an external weatherproof double socket on the outside of the brick enclosure housing the control panel and compressor. This video aims to show that even seemingly daunting electrical tasks can be perfectly manageable for a DIY enthusiast. With a bit of caution and the right tools, you can safely and effectively handle these upgrades yourself. So, what's the worst that can happen? Tune in and find out! I Bought 2 Boxes of Spanners for £20 (Q&A)
Never seen anyone using washing up liquid like this. Is that a social media thing?
I was hoping that they were for some sort of blinders 😢
I have lived in this house for the last 38 years. It is large and the roof has many Veluxes. It is now 1.38 AM. I get out of bed and check. EACH ONE of them has a ruddy bolt! I never knew! Boy do I feel dumb... but now I can play clever 😅. Thanks!
@@F.E.Terman 😉 you're welcome 😁
I bloody hate jobs that go like that. Should just be a straightforward job but then all the little things happen. Frustrating for you. I love your swearing in these. Anyone who doesn’t can fuck off.
The UK has the best plugs going. Love using them. They are satisfying to look at. However what’s with the whole unsheathed earth? In Australia and NZ the cable just comes with all three wires sheathed. Just how it is. Easy.
got a better house than me that
Jesus…..i have seen some baggy sleeving in my time but that’s just taking the pi$$! 😂
@@CBE-d6j 😂 like a wizards sleeve
Very funny and great videos.
technically you could have just wired it into the switched fused spur.
I genuinely thought the thing on top of that box was a toaster. 😂
😆 the compressor special, toasts small crumpets
I tape the join, acetone, silicone, tool it with my finger and then pull tape off, soap and tool it so theres no ridge line. Stops soap getting under it.
Just been up into the loft to check our Velux and…lo and behold!…you’re right….never realised we had those…many thanks!
Aiden, great videos! Noticed you need a label maker, I'm here! I make professional labels, if you get back to me I will sort them for you foc. Best regards Chris
Helpful hint, use a step drill to go through the back box and it won't snatch the box from you like the normal drill bit did. Glad you got it all done and I agree with the ridiculous size of some of the back boxes, they really annoy the hell out of me too!
Love step drills.
the worst part of every job is clearing the fucking tools away when you've finished... the amount of tools used sometimes is bewildering. well done on getting it sorted
Lol, just looked at mine. Surprise discovered, cheers!
Someone I know mentioned using a Niimbot - mobile printer label maker. He seemed to think it was OK for mild work, and cheap enough not to be sad if you left it in the rain.
Was 100% waiting for you to put the socket in and the socket door not close 🤣
That was painful to watch 😳😩 Well done for persevering though Aiden 👏👌
Another job done ✔️
Danm it I hold the wondow while cleaning too!
Surely would've been easier to just fit a proper plug instead. Even if you swapped out the socket to an outdoor type.. which actually fits together nicely instead of that thing.
This might not be the answer you were asking for, but I got a cheap label maker from a carboot sale, paid £3 for one 😁
Aaaaaaand kicked
i have got the same tester. I had no problems with outdoor sockets, been in over 5 years
If you leave it long enough the grass will hide it ;)
Label maker - Niimbot, for example D110 is very cheap. They have different formats too
Haven't watched it yet, but yesterday... Whilst trying to add an electrical outlet in my sauna, I discovered the incoming main power supply plug was labelled opposite to what the control box had been wired for. I'd diligently followed the labelling on the plug, but then gave myself a shock from what should have been a neutral wire. I mean, I shouldn't have been working on it live of course, but at least I realised there was an issue😂
Neutral is still a live conductor
@@mikethemask1525 but there should normally not be a voltage on it to shock you
BS7671 18th Edition ("The wiring regulations") requires that RCD protection be provided for all socket outlets rated up to 32A in outdoor locations. If you do not have a 30mA RCD upstream, then you should really be including one before the Schuko socket. The BS1363 socket you removed had one. Highly recommended. Could save your life. Easiest would be to replace the fused connection unit for one with an RCD. Another thing to think about is fusing. If the air pump requires a 3A fuse, you might require a 3A RCD protected fused switch for the Shuko, and retain the 13A fused switch for the BS1363 socket. Shuko sockets are not shuttered (a requirement for domestic premises), so I would be inclined to cut the plug off and wire it straight into a 3A RCD protected fused connection unit fed from the 13A fused connection unit.
And his distribution board has a BG MCB in what appears to be a Proteus distribution board, a no no under the regs! But it does look like the distribution board has an RCD, but can’t read details.
@@davidchamberlain1513 Because, as we all know, a bimetallic strip and a simple solenoid can't be expected to work properly when placed next to the wrong label.
The consumer unit has a 30ma RCD, so are we all good? Apart from the question of what the control panel needs in terms of fuses
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT Yes, that RCD will be fine. As for fuses, if they're supplying it with a standard Schuko plug they've no reasonable expectation of anything less than a B16 MCB supplying it.
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT If it was my install, I would be okay with that from an earth fault perspective, provided there are no extraneuous metal parts near the pump end (metal water pipes, etc). That would complicate matters and at that point I would suggest employing an electrician. For fusing, I would probably install a BS1363 socket or fused connection unit for the pump. The weatherproof socket didn't need an RCD as you have one upstream (and would be frowned upon as there would be no selectivity, ie a fault on something plugged into the socket could cause the RCD in the board to trip taking out other circuits and causing a nusiance). These are my understandings of the wiring regulations. I am not qualified in this specific area. Seeking professional advise about outdoor wiring is recommended.
Doesn't condensation happen due to cold? so even in the little roofed porch electronics can get damp and corrode. I imagine either the electronics in it's enclosure generates enough heat to keep the temperature above the dew point or there might even be heating resistors to heat up the air inside when it is cold. Could be if the power to the unit is switched off for a prolonged period in cold weather condensation can occur inside. Just me guessing. Lesson learned methinks!l!...namely always cut the wire longer than you think it needs to be. But lovely feeling when you switch on and it works......a sense of amazement & achievement 👍
@@Sean006 that's what happened to the plug in the winter but thats because it wasn't a sealed plug being a cheap adapter. The control unit is sealed and it's summer so there wouldn't be any chance of condensation
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT sealed electronics often experience condensation effects. Most enclosures actually have IP vents to allow heat to escape without allowing additional moisture in.
🙏👍😊
Cool little video Aiden. I flipping hate trying to squeeze wires into back boxes.
Errrrm you shouldn't be doing electrics
Yeah..... that's what all the rip off electricians out there want you to believe....😏
😂😂😂😂😂
😱
Replacing a socket is not notifiable works and you therefore are aloud to do it. The circuit should not have any major changes though.
Woof!
You should have used the click bait of I was "Shocked"

😮😅I was a window cleaner for years
Ow my F god,I’ve had these on last 2 properties.. Never know the reason for those. And I have never seen them on the instructions/installation manual
If you want to remove the silicone with just gasoline and scrub with a cloth, it will come off quickly
Danish design - the best of the best! And YES, it IS in the manual how to lock the window in place for cleaning.
@@JakobVarming not in the installation manual, it's a separate sheet that isn't prominent and no doubt stays in the box
@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT It's in the manual for cleaning the window. Of course it is not in the installation manual.
I have been doing this for years, but not to clean the glass. If you use this lock you get better air flow, hot goes out the top, cooler comes in the bottom.
Why don’t they tell you?🤷🏼♀️
@@westaussie965 they're just not that good at communicating
99% of people don't read the manual or bother to get the info from their installers
I bought a house 23 years ago with Velux in the roof. I’ve just gone up and looked. It has this. I’ve learnt something today
Just moved into a rooftop Apartment and was wondering how to clean the windows from outside. You made my day!!!!
One way you can often tell the wire size is read it off the cable. Most now have the size of the conductor stamped along its length
It's all explained in the care instructions that come with the velux window.
Knowing this would have prevented me launching my window cleaning spray bottle into the neighbours back yard 2 houses away.
